NoodleRice&Friends is a young internationally recognized artist collective founded by Yao Zhang and Liang Guo, both born and raised in west China and now are traveling and working between United States and China. NoodleRice was first formed as a film collective while both Yao and Liang were in Beijing Film Academy. They later expanded their interest in live performance during MFA study in California Institute of the Arts. Now NoodleRice works with both cinema and live performance, plus the area in-between.
2017 is a year of reformation for NoodleRice. Other than participating in HOME LA, workshopping and showing their in-development work in Highways Performance Space, NoodleRice also finished a few inspirational trip in US, Europe and China. In the Summer, via the recommendation of the Watermill Center, NoodleRice was invited by Holland Festival as one of the five artists from all over the world to participate in their talent program, NoodleRice was also the only invited artist from North America and Asia. In the fall, NoodleRice finished the artist residence in the Watermill Center, continuing developing their new devised theater piece A Bibliography of Romance - 20X0 Sex On Mars. It is scheduled to premiere in 2018-2019. Later in the fall, NoodleRice had their debut show in China in Ullens Center for the Contemporary Art(UCCA) in Beijing. They performed their very first performance piece, My Favorite Food during the UCCA 10th anniversary.
NoodleRice’s work has been selected and shown internationally and nationally in the US and Europe, including: Watermill Center(under the artistic direction of Robert Wilson), Rabbithole as part of EOarts Performance Series 2016 in New York, SPACE gallery as part of the PAF(Performance Art Festival)2016 in Pittsburgh, Redcat, Automata, HomeLA event and Tongva Park in Los Angeles. NoodleRice’s work has also been selected into ManPower Art Festival in Lisbon Portagul , /re.si.lien.ce/Performing Art 3 Days in Florence Italy, the second Tier of Sundance Institute New Frontier Story Lab, and the finalist of Rapid Pulse International Performance Art Festival.
Besides working as a collective, Yao Zhang is also a set/production designer for stage and film, Liang Guo is a film director/cinematographer and a painter.
